Equal Citizens

Minority Citizens, Equal Citizens

SYRKI's first EU programme strengthened the Rum community's part in public life, with events in Istanbul, Imbros, Tenedos and Hatay.

The programme began in December 2012 for 22 months, funded by the European Instrument for Democracy and Human Rights, with a total budget of €90,000 (8% from SYRKI).

It focused on the Rum community's part in the country's public life: knowing their rights, building skills and giving know-how to community bodies. It was prompted by the finding that, despite reforms, public discourse often remained hostile to minorities.
