CONSTANTINOPOLITE PERSONALITY
CORNELIA CHEVIK BAVERTIAN
"The book is dedicated to Istanbul and its people..." says Dr. Ellogimi on the first page. Philology Professor Mrs. Cornelia Chevik Bayvertian
in her new book recently published in Athens with the above mentioned title by "TSOUKATOU Publications".
In the preface, the author mentions, very correctly, that this book is an attempt to record the "oral history" of the Roma of Istanbul
and includes interviews he conducted with a wide range of expatriates, which were published in the monthly magazine PAROS – ΤΑROS (in Turkish) and in the newspaper POLITIS Athens (in Greek).
"....Oral history, however, is also a link between generations, contributes to the awareness of common identity ... and is a means of searching for -historical awareness".
Indeed the reader feels the same emotions while reading the book.
The book begins with the "Foreword" by Mr. Stavros Anestidis, who states that:
"Today the Roman Community of Istanbul finds itself in the process of transforming its identity into cultural heritage."
The book begins "honorably" with the interview of A.Th.P. of our Ecumenical Patriarch Mr. Bartholomaiou, which in a large part refers to memories from the birthplace of Imbros.
Of course, space does not allow us here to refer to all the highly valuable interviews, but we will mention two of them as examples,
of St. Pergis Mr. Evangelos and our late Teacher Dimitrios Fragopoulos.
Agios Pergis refers mainly to his collaboration with Patriarch Athenagoras, on the night of the events of September 6-7,
so it was also a goal, in church music and in his collaboration with Protopsaltis Leonidas Asteris.
From the interview of our late teacher Dimitrios Fragopoulos, we selected what he raised for the future development of the community
us after the 2006 conference:
a) the existence of appropriate political conditions
b) the correct organization of communities
c) the upgrading of education and
d) the economic development of the Roma community.
"Dear and respected teacher, so many years have passed and we are still discussing the same topics at a snail's pace."
Also for the upgrading of education, he proposed the formation of an Education Committee, which is made up of capable people who have ideas and dynamism, to work on solving them.
God loved him anyway and did not see the results of the efforts of a similar committee that we experienced in the last period.
Forever their Memory.
The book is literally a concise study of 20th and 21st century history by people who have expertise and experience in their field
and this feeling we believe the reader will feel.
We congratulate our dear colleague Philology Professor Dr. Mr. Cornelia Chevik Bayvertian,
for her varied writing work and I thank her for the honorary dedication of one of the first copies of her book to the writer.
